Here at Northwest Vascular and Vein, our preferred varicose vein treatment is Endovenous Laser Therapy. Endovenous laser therapy, also known as EVLT is an innovative method for eliminating unsightly and often painful varicose veins. The procedure uses laser energy to heat the affected vein, causing the vein walls to seal together so the vein closes. Surrounding vessels, tissue, and skin are left untouched by the laser. Blood is rerouted to healthy veins nearby and the treated vein is eliminated through natural body processes. Aside from EVLT being the most effective and advanced treatment for varicose veins, it is also the most affordable. There are other treatments on the market that can cost up to $400 more per procedure and according to studies, are not as effective.
A narrow fiber is inserted directly into the affected vein to administer laser energy. The fiber requires a tiny incision that typically requires no suturing afterward. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis at Northwest Vascular & Vein using topical numbing cream or local anesthesia.
The entire procedure takes less than one hour to complete. Most patients are able to return to work and regular activities immediately after the procedure, although some wait until the next day to resume activities. Some patients do experience mild discomfort and swelling after EVLT, which is easily managed with oral pain medication.
Ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is a procedure performed in conjunction with EVLT. The main source branches are first closed using Endovenous Laser Treatment. After about 6 weeks, we wait to how much the branches at the surface of the skin shut down. Any remaining branches that are causing symptoms, can be closed using sclerotherapy. This procedure is guided by ultrasound to scar down the remaining branches.
The branch vein near the surface of the skin is located using ultrasound. The physician then injects a sclerosant medicine to scar down the vein. We perform this procedure injecting all remaining branch varicose veins seen on the surface.
You will see the results of your EVLT and ultrasound procedures right away, but those results will continue to improve over time. Any symptoms you were experiencing with your varicose veins will be immediately relieved. You may experience some tenderness along the course of the treated vein. There may also be some redness. Since veins are effectively eliminated, the procedure is considered permanent. However, it is possible additional varicose veins will form in the area over time, requiring additional treatment.
